Debulking in Cardiovascular Interventions and Revascularization
Strategies: Between a Rock and the Heart aims to provide a
comprehensive overview on the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of
resistant lesions as well as tailored debulking processes in
revascularization strategies. Cardiovascular interventionalists and
surgeons alike frequently encounter technical challenges and
increased risk when attempting to diagnose and treat resistant
cardiovascular lesions, bio-tissues and vessels. Calcified plaques,
fibrotic or thrombotic lesions, total occlusions, degenerative
plaques, complex lesions and vessels impose morphologic obstacles
to the safe and effective delivery and deployment of balloons and
stents. In such instances, a debulking strategy involving the
actual drilling and extraction of the targeted plaque/bio-tissue
constitutes a unique option that ensures safe and efficacious
subsequent balloon dilatations and stenting. A range of topics is
included in the book, from the characteristics and constituents of
various resistant targets and bio-tissues, to the corresponding
options of debulking methods, and finally the technologic and
pharmacologic means available for application. The book also
provides an up-to-date description of related management solutions
and tools, exploring the medical issues pertaining to the patients
with these targets; procedural results and clinical outcomes as
related to debulking strategies and associated diagnostic and
therapeutic technology and revascularization options.
Because of its large command structure and intricate syntax,
Mathematica can be difficult to learn. Wolfram's Mathematica
manual, while certainly comprehensive, is so large and complex that
when trying to learn the software from scratch -- or find answers
to specific questions -- one can be quickly overwhelmed. A
Beginner's Guide to Mathematica offers a simple, step-by-step
approach to help math-savvy newcomers build the skills needed to
use the software in practice. Concise and easy to use, this book
teaches by example and points out potential pitfalls along the way.
The presentation starts with simple problems and discusses multiple
solution paths, ranging from basic to elegant, to gradually
introduce the Mathematica toolkit. More challenging and eventually
cutting-edge problems follow. The authors place high value on
notebook and file system organization, cross-platform capabilities,
and data reading and writing. The text features an array of error
messages you will likely encounter and clearly describes how to
deal with those situations. While it is by no means exhaustive,
this book offers a non-threatening introduction to Mathematica that
will teach you the aspects needed for many practical applications,
get you started on performing specific, relatively simple tasks,
and enable you to build on this experience and move on to more
real-world problems.

Handbook of Economic Expectations discusses the state-of-the-art in
the collection, study and use of expectations data in economics,
including the modelling of expectations formation and updating, as
well as open questions and directions for future research. The book
spans a broad range of fields, approaches and applications using
data on subjective expectations that allows us to make progress on
fundamental questions around the formation and updating of
expectations by economic agents and their information sets. The
information included will help us study heterogeneity and potential
biases in expectations and analyze impacts on behavior and
decision-making under uncertainty.
For centuries, raising pigeons and doves was a symbol of
privilege granted to the aristocracy. Before the French Revolution,
there were over forty thousand dovecotes in France: large,
freestanding buildings that Vicki Topaz depicts in her enigmatic
black-and-white photographs. Today, less than one thousand of these
"colombiers" remain.
Images from "Silent Nests "are included in several American
collections, like the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and have been
presented at international venues and photo festivals.
Vicki Topaz is based in San Francisco. She is one of the
co-founders of PhotoAlliance and a member of San Francisco
Camerawork.
Since the introduction of laser devices to the medical sciences
this technology has created great interest. Specifically, the
laser's unique physical properties and precise bio-tissue
interactions render this versatile source of biologic energy an
attractive tool for multiple therapeutic purposes in cardiovascular
medicine. Over the course of the last 2 decades the utilization of
laser technology has become an important component for the
management of patients with complex cardiovascular diseases. During
this time period, cutting edge laser technology including a variety
of wave length generators, newly designed catheters, and a
selection of advanced optic fibers have been introduced and applied
in the cardiovascular circulation. Improved lasing techniques in
the cardiac catheterization suites and operation rooms have been
implemented for treatment of ischemic coronary syndromes,
peripheral arterial occlusive disease and other atherosclerotic
thrombotic conditions. Moreover, during this 20 year time frame,
several multicenter and single center clinical studies have been
published focusing on the role and utilization of lasers in
coronary and peripheral revascularization. And within the rapidly
expanding field of interventional cardiac electrophysiology, laser
technology has recently revolutionized the management of fractured,
abandoned and malfunctioning leads of cardiac pacemakers and
automatic defibrillators. Consequently, replacing a notoriously
cumbersome and high risk open heart surgery with safe and markedly
efficient percutaneous laser based extraction. This textbook will
provide the most authoritative, comprehensive and contemporary
information covering technological progress, clinical experience
and pertinent aspects of laser applications in cardiovascular
medicine. It will be of interest to cardiologists, vascular
surgeons and interventional radiologist as well as medical
students, scientists, biomedical engineering students and
graduates.

With the long-term trend toward earlier retirement slowing, and the
majority of older workers remaining in employment up to and beyond
statutory retirement age, it is increasingly important that we
understand how to react to these changes. Bridge employment
patterns and activities have changed greatly over the past decade,
yet there is little information about the benefits of the various
different forms this can take, both for employees and employers.
This comparative international collection provides the first
comprehensive summary of the literature on bridge employment,
bringing together experiences from Europe, the United States,
Canada, Australia and Japan. It identifies the opportunities,
barriers and gaps in knowledge and practice, whilst offering
recommendations on how organisations and individuals can cope with
future challenges in aging and work. Written by international
experts in the field, each chapter also makes substantive and
contextualized suggestions for public policy and organizational
decision-makers, providing them with a roadmap to implement and
integrate bridge employment into policies and practices designed to
prolong working life - a priority for workers, organizations and
societies in the coming decades. This unique research handbook will
be useful to a wide range of readers with an interest in the new
concept of bridge employment and the extension of working life, and
of interest to researchers and practitioners in organizational
behavior, labor market analysis, human resource management, career
development/counselling, occupational health, social economy and
public policy administration
Cardiovascular Thrombus: From Pathology and Clinical Presentations
to Imaging, Pharmacotherapy and Interventions provides a
comprehensive, up-to-date presentation of the research and clinical
practices as related to the contemporary aspects of the diagnosis
and management of cardiovascular thrombosis. The formation,
identification and management of cardiovascular thrombus is of
paramount importance for researchers and practicing physicians, yet
it remains one of the most challenging diagnostic and clinical
scenarios. This important reference connects between research,
up-to-date clinical knowledge, and the technological tools
available for diagnosis and management of thrombus in
cardiovascular medicine. The book includes comprehensive
descriptions and review of pathology, clinical presentations,
diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, interventions and future trends. It is
the perfect reference for basic science students and researchers in
general and interventional cardiology, general and interventional
radiology, vascular medicine specialists, and vascular, general and
cardiac surgeons.
